ATEX

Compliance with ATEX Intrinsic Safety for Equipment Sold in the European Union

APEX Mobile Power complies with ATEX intrinsic safety standards for equipment sold in the European Union. Our lithium-ion batteries and custom battery packs are designed to reduce explosion risk and ensure safety in hazardous work environments, meeting multi-stage compliance through design evaluation, testing, and quality assurance to meet the ATEX requirements.

What is ATEX?

Referring to two European Union directives, Directive 2014/34/EU and Directive 1999/92/EC, ATEX stands for ‘Atmosphères Explosibles’ and outlines equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres, as well as the minimum requirements for improving the safety and health protection of workers who may be at risk. Lithium-ion batteries must comply with ATEX standards because they can produce internal sparks or hot spots.

Why is ATEX Important?

For lithium-ion batteries and custom battery packs, ATEX is essential to ensuring the battery design and battery management system (BMS) can operate within an explosive environment without ignition. It identifies and confirms that equipment has been evaluated and can be used in explosive atmospheres, providing a reliable solution that meets stringent safety and quality requirements. Noncompliance is not only a safety risk, but also carries legal implications, making ATEX essential for equipment in certain environments.

Who Needs to Comply with ATEX Standards?

Batteries store and release chemical and electrical energy; because some battery-powered equipment is necessary in explosive environments, battery manufacturers must comply with ATEX standards to reduce the risk of explosions or fires that could harm employees. This is especially critical for applications used in oil and gas, mining, and chemical industries.
