UL 60079-11
UL 60079-11 Certification for Intrinsically Safe Environments
APEX Mobile Power (AMP) complies with UL 60079-11 for intrinsically safe environments regarding our lithium-ion batteries and custom battery packs. As the U.S. National Electrical Code (NEC) equivalent of IEC 60079-11, it defines intrinsic safety, including protection methods for electrical equipment used in explosive atmospheres. To discuss certified safe and reliable battery solutions, contact AMP or request a quote to begin.
What is UL 60079-11?
UL 60079-11 is a safety standard for constructing and testing electrical equipment used in explosive atmospheres. It outlines energy limits, fault scenarios, apparatus types, and zone placement, and explains intrinsic safety, spark and heat prevention, and international harmonization for fully compliant solutions, wherever the equipment is used. For batteries, it certifies that the apparatus will not release enough electrical spark or heat to ignite flammable materials in hazardous work areas, even during severe faults or short circuits. Governing intrinsic safety, it specifically limits the voltage, current, and energy stored within a device.
Who Needs to Comply with UL 60079-11 for Intrinsically Safe Environments?
Compliance with UL 60079-11 is required for manufacturers of electrical equipment and associated apparatus intended for use in explosive or hazardous atmospheres. Any company that designs, builds, or tests electrical devices must be certified to UL 60079-11, as well as manufacturers of associated devices that connect to circuits entering hazardous zones.
